Korea: The Forgotten War in Colour.
To commemorate the sixtieth anniversary of the outbreak of the Korean War, this two-part documentary seeks to tell the story of that conflict. Using original rare colour archive film, much of it never seen before, this is the story of Korea: The Forgotten War in Colour. This is the conflict that brought the world to the brink of nuclear armageddon and scarred a nation so deeply that it is still bitterly divided today.
The Korean War was a bloody conflict. It left Korea, North and South, with several million dead and the UN forces involved in the fighting with over 100,000 casualties. But despite fighting as intense and as violent as any other conflict since World War Two, Korea has always been historys Forgotten War.
Part 1. Outbreak.
In 1950, as the international community was coming to terms with the aftermath of World War II, a new conflict broke out at the edge of the Asian continent.
It was a rare example of the Cold War turning hot - pitting the US and its allies against the USSR, North Korea and communist China. It was marked by dramatic swings of fortune and a devastating death toll.
Estimates vary, but at least two million Korean civilians, up to 1.5 million communist forces, and around 30,000 US, 400,000 South Korean and 1,000 UK troops are believed to have died. For two of the three years that the war was under way, both sides were actually trying to negotiate a peace.
Part 2. Stalemate.
In mid-1951, with the land battle in stalemate, both sides agreed to go to the conference table and armistice talks began. They dragged on for two years. The main haggling point was the future of the tens of thousands of communist prisoners held in camps on Koje Island off the coast of South Korea.
In July 1953, a great calm descended over the battlefields and in Operation Big Switch, thousands of former prisoners on each side were returned. A Demilitarised Zone or DMZ was established on the border. Both sides withdrew from their fighting positions, and a UN commission was set up to supervise the armistice.
When a ceasefire was eventually signed, on 27 July 1953, no-one could have guessed that 50 years later, the two Koreas would remain technically at war. A peace treaty has never been signed, and the border continues to bristle with mines, artillery and hundreds of troops.
In July 1953, a great calm descended over the battlefields...
